If you are afraid of the dark, you seek the light. But what do you do when even the light is filled with terrors?

We believe what we see.’...What do you do when you’re in the dark?

Until we have met the monsters in ourselves, we keep trying to slay them in the outer world. And we find that we cannot. For all darkness in the world stems from darkness in the heart. And it is there that we must do our work.

Oh, we can populate the dark with horrors, even we who think ourselves informed and sure, believing nothing we cannot measure or weigh. I knew beyond all doubt that the dark things crowding in on me either did not exist or were not dangerous to me, and still I was afraid. I thought how terrible the nights must have been in a time when men knew the things were there and were deadly. But no, that's wrong. If I knew they were there, I would have weapons against them, charms, prayers, some kind of alliance with forces equally strong but on my side. Knowing they were not there made me defenseless against them and perhaps more afraid.

What about the dark? We could lock you in the basement."
"I'm a demon hunter. Clearly, I am not afraid of the dark.

Don't feed the monsters...Some are sent to you deliberately. They come from arrows of gossip, jealousy, and envy- and inadvertently from thoughtlessness. They feed on your attention, and feast on your fear.

Fighting fear doesn't work. It just drags us in closer. One has to focus on what is real. On the truth. When in darkness, don't fight it. You can't win. Just find the nearest switch, turn on the light.

Life's cruelest joke is that the path to the light runs straight through the dark. Everything you want is on the other side of everything that scares you. You must stare into the abyss. You must carve open your soul. You must search for what you've spent your whole life avoiding. Please. There is no other way. Chase your shadow until it stops running from you and shows you what it's been protecting all along. You'll smile when the monster turns out to be a guardian. Then you'll wave goodbye and walk free. You found peace.

Whereas what we need is to fumble around in the darkness, because that's where our lives (not necessarily all of the time, but at least some of the time, and particularly when life gets problematical for us) takes place.

The person who fights monsters should make sure that in the process, he does not become a monster himself. Because when you stare down at an abyss, the abyss stares back at you.
