Life is a school of the spirit.

In my mind, as a child at that time, the only way to escape poverty was to go to school. It was at that time that I decided to commit myself to school.

I left for two reasons, economic necessity being the first of them. More important was that school was interfering with my education.

The constant moving and fighting, the seemingly endless carousel of new people I had to meet, learn to love, and then forget — this, and not my subpar public school, was the real barrier to opportunity.

I knew that it was only education that was to liberate me and my family from the grips of poverty.

Segregation shaped me; education liberated me.

Experience, travel - these are an education in themselves.

At its best, schooling can be about how to make a life, which is quite different from how to make a living.

I am a student of life, and don't want to miss any experience. There's poetry in this sort of thing, you know — or perhaps you don't know, but it's all the same.
