I looked up at the dark sky and prayed to God for a better break in life and a better chance to do something for the little people I loved.

I prayed for a time like this – to be in a position to help people. I cannot deny the role of these people in my life, their stories open my eyes to realities my privilege shields me from. It breaks my heart when I am not able to help some of them, but I am hopeful they’ll find help somewhere.

I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just.”35

I once sat on the rim of a mesa above the Rio Grande for three days and nights, trying to have a vision. I got hungry and saw God in the form of a beef pie.

We must hear the questions raised by Fannie Lou Hamer forty years ago. Every American everywhere asks herself, himself, these questions Hamer asked:

What do I think of my country? What is there, which elevates my shoulders and stirs my blood when I hear the words, the United States of America: Do I praise my country enough? Do I laud my fellow citizens enough? What is there about my country that makes me hang my head and avert my eyes when I hear the words the United States of America, and what am I doing about it? Am I relating my disappointment to my leaders and to my fellow citizens, or am I like someone not involved, sitting high and looking low? As Americans, we should not be afraid to respond.

That day I oft remember, when from sleep
I first awaked, and found myself reposed,
Under a shade, on flowers, much wondering where
And what I was, whence thither brought, and how.

Mr. Speaker, you have no idea how great this feels to be great back here at work in people's House. As you can imagine, these last 3 1/2 months have been pretty challenging times for me and my family. But, if you look at the outpouring of love — my gosh Jennifer and I have been overwhelmed with the outpouring — It's given us the strength to get through all of this. And get to this point today; it starts with God.W hen I was laying out on that ball field, the first thing I did once I was down and couldn't move anymore, I started to pray. And tell you, it gave me an unbelievable sense of calm knowing at that point it's in God’s hands. I prayed for specific things, and I'll tell you, pretty much every one of those prayers was answered. They were some pretty challenging prayers I was putting in God's hands, but he really did deliver for me and my family. And it just gives you that renewed faith and understanding that the power of prayer is something you cannot under estimate. So I'm a living example that miracles really do happen. ...
As we're fighting through the issues of the day, let's just keep in mind that we rise above the challenges of the day and understand that it's not just us and our constituents and the country, the United States, that's counting on us to be successful. People all around the world believe in freedom are counting on us as well, and we will deliver for them. That's why I am so honored to be back here in the House serving with you. God bless each and every one of you, and God bless the United States of America.

Dear Mr. President,

What do you feel
When you look in the mirror?
Are you proud?

After three days we reached land, and for twenty-eight days journeyed through uninhabited country, and the food ran out and hunger overtook them; and one day the steersman began saying: "Why is it, Christian? Yes … but was I happy? Did I sit there and did contentment bathe me in its warm light?
