Curiosity keeps us happier, healthier, and more fulfilled. If curiosity were a pill, all the world's pharmaceutical companies would call it a super-drug and clamor to sell it.

My deeply held belief is that if a god of anything like the traditional short exists, our curiosity and intelligence are provided by such a god. We would be unappreciative of those gifts (as well as unable to take such a course of action) if we suppressed our passion to explore the universe and ourselves. On the other hand if such a god does not exist, our curiosity and our intelligence are the essential tools for managing our survival. In either case, the enterprise of knowledge is consistent with both science and religion, and is essential for welfare of the human species.

A curious mind must be properly fed

It’s a good idea, when people are curious, to give them something to sustain that curiosity—and direct it.

Human curiosity. Such a very interesting thing. Think of what we owe to it throughout history. It is said to be usually associated with the cat. Curiosity killed the cat. But I should say really that the Greeks were the inventors of curiosity.

To have good ideas, we need to consume good ideas too.
Follow your curiosity.

Curiosity can empower you or impede you.

Being curious and focused is a powerful combination. I define this combination as unleashing your curiosity within the domain of a particular task: asking questions about how things work, exploring different lines of attack for solving the problem, reading ideas from outside domains while always looking for ways to transfer the knowledge back to your main task, and so on. Even though you're exploring widely, you're generally moving the ball forward on the main thing. You start something and you keep searching until you find an effective way to finish it.

Meanwhile, when your curiosity sends you off in a dozen different directions and fractures your attention, then it can prevent you from focusing on one thing long enough to see it through to completion. Curious, but unfocused. You're jumping from one topic to the next, they aren't necessarily related, your efforts don't accumulate, you're simply exploring. You start many things and finish few.

How is your curiosity being directed? Is it rocket fuel or a roadblock?

Curiosity is one of the permanent and certain characteristics of a vigorous intellect.

Following your genuine intellectual curiosity is a better foundation for a career than following whatever is making money right now.

One of the grand fallacies of our time is that something beneficial should be subsidized.

Curiosity is antifragile, like an addiction, and is magnified by attempts to satisfy it — books have a secret mission and ability to multiply, as everyone who has wall-to-wall bookshelves knows well.

Follow your intellectual curiosity over whatever is “hot” right now. If your curiosity ever leads you to a place where society eventually wants to go, you’ll get paid extremely well.

In the early stages, curiosity can seem frivolous. That’s part of why it gets dismissed. It doesn’t obviously bear immediate fruit. It’s just some annoying kid asking irksome questions. But these meddlesome kids go on to invent fertilizer and dynamite, atom bombs and iPhones.
