I remember when I first realized I never had to have children. It was like walking out of a narrow alley into a wide open field. I never have to get married. I never have to date anyone. I don’t even have to care about sex. These realizations were like gifts that I gave myself.

I was young and I wanted to have sex. I didn't want to remain a virgin. And then I thought: what options do I have? All the girls my age had a boyfriend, they were in love for a month, then they were sad, then they changed (...) I knew it was just going to be a waste of time, that it wasn't going to get me anywhere. I thought: I might as well have sex and earn something in return. I found it more exciting. And I didn't like men my age at all, I didn't find them interesting.

The truth is, sex doesn't mean that much to me now. It never did, really. It was romance I wanted, kisses and candlelight, that sort of thing. I never did dig sex very much.

Sex without love is an empty experience. But as empty experiences go, it's one of the best.

I didn’t have any friends. I didn’t know any kids besides my cousins. I wasn’t a lonely kid — I was good at being alone. I’d read books, play with the toy that I had, make up imaginary worlds. I lived inside my head. I still live inside my head. To this day you can leave me alone for hours and I’m perfectly happy entertaining myself. I have to remember to be with people.

It is very easy to love alone.
