Be like a rocky promontory against which the restless surf continually pounds; it stands fast while the churning sea is lulled to sleep at its feet. I hear you say, "How unlucky that this should happen to me!" Not at all! Say instead, "How lucky that I am not broken by what has happened and am not afraid of what is about to happen. The same blow might have struck anyone, but not many would have absorbed it without capitulation or complaint."

I’m not hurt. I’m appalled.

I have managed to conceal my madness fairly effectively, and as far as I know it hasn't hurt anybody badly, for which I am grateful.

Why isn't it okay to say there are things we have not survived?

So remember this principle when something threatens to cause you pain: the thing itself was no misfortune at all; to endure it and prevail is great good fortune.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

I'm very lucky the whole face has not collapsed.

Do not feel bad because of it. It's impossible to go through life unscathed. Nor should you want to. By the hurts we accumulate, we measure both our follies and our accomplishment.

If someone claims the incident was pre-planned, I completely refute this. What happened was an accident. It is unfortunate.

Be willing to have it so. Acceptance of what has happened is the first step to overcoming the consequences of any misfortune.

Stay confident even when something bad happens. It is just a bump in the road. It will pass.

I’ve learned not to worry about what might come next.

It did not seem to them that anything that could happen in the future could blot out the wonder and beauty of the thing that had happened.

Dear friends, may no adversity paralyze you. Be afraid neither of the world, nor of the future, nor of your weakness. The Lord has allowed you to live in this moment of history so that, by your faith, his name will continue to resound throughout the world.
