He is regarded as the "Father of Statistical Science in India". Born and primarily educated at his native village in Munshiganj.

The lexicons give both meanings. Amarakosa gives Sankhya – vicarana (deliberation, analysis) as well as ‘number’; also Sankhyavan – panditah (wise, learned).
