Loving someone is like having a mental illness that’s not covered by health insurance.

Romantic love is mental illness. But it's a pleasurable one. It's a drug. It distorts reality, and that's the point of it. It would be impossible to fall in love with someone that you really saw.

The symptom of love is when some of the chemicals inside you go bad. So there must be something in love because your chemicals do tell you something.

Love is a sickness full of woes, All remedies refusing;
A plant that with most cutting grows, Most barren with best using. Why so?
More we enjoy it, more it dies;
If not enjoy’d, it sighing cries— Heigh ho!Love is a torment of the mind, A tempest everlasting;
And Jove hath made it of a kind Not well, nor full nor fasting. Why so?

Love is a disease which fills you with a desire to be desired.

Love as a force contributory to disease.

It has been further suggested that the absence of love is the major cause of mental illness and that the presence of love is consequently the essential healing element in psychotherapy.

We have a dysfunctional dream of the planet, and humans are mentally sick with a disease called fear. The symptoms of the disease are all the emotions that make humans suffer: anger, hate, sadness, envy, and betrayal. When the fear is too great, the reasoning mind begins to fail, and we call this mental illness.

He regarded love as a sort of cruel malady through which the elect are required to pass in their late youth and from which they emerge, pale and wrung, but ready for the business of living.

I gave examples from my clinical practice of how love was not wholly a thought or feeling. I told of how that very evening there would be some man sitting at a bar in the local village, crying into his beer and sputtering to the bartender how much he loved his wife and children while at the same time he was wasting his family's money and depriving them of his attention. We recounted how this man was thinking love and feeling love — were they not real tears in his eyes? — but he was not in truth behaving with love.

The manic lover does not love his beloved as much as God loves the repentant soul.

Religion is a species of mental disease. It has always had a pathological reaction on mankind.
