Curb your desire—don’t set your heart on so many things and you will get what you need.

It betrays a lack of an interior life when a person is overly focused on bodily things — whether indulging in food and drink, exercising to exhaustion, or spending excessive time on grooming. Care for your body as needed, but put your main energies and efforts into cultivating your mind.

لا تكن كالأطفال آنًا فيلسوفًا، ثُمَّ جابيًا، ثُمَّ خطيبًا، ثُمَّ موظَّفًا لقيصر؛ فهذه الأشياء لا تَتَّسِق. إنما عليك أن تكون شخصًا واحدًا، جَيِّدًا أو رديئًا. إما أن تُنمِّي ملَكَتك العقلية، وإما أن تُنمِّي أشياءك الخارجية. إمَّا أن تنصرف إلى الأشياء الداخلية وإما إلى الأشياء الخارجية؛ أي إنك إمَّا أن تكون أحدَ الفلاسفة، وإمَّا أن تكون أحدَ السُّوقة.
