...love, and consequently fear, of the crowd being one of the most powerful motives in all human beings...

From an early age, I learnt to have courage after seeing my community protesting and fighting against apartheid.

This was my dream since my childhood days.

I was a super shy, awkward kid, and performing was a comfortable and joyful way of expressing myself that allowed me the freedom to do so. The passion for acting grew from there. From the time I was little, being on the stage or inhabiting a character was always where I was happiest.

I think it was. I think growing up very shy, it was easier for me to block out things going on around me and that’s very helpful when you’re on the balance beam and there’s a million different things going on. I just could very naturally do that. And it really became a skill.

I am not afraid...I was born to do this

"It is only in a crowd that man can become free of this fear of being touched. That is the only situation in which the fear changes into its opposite. The crowd he needs is the dense crowd, in which body is pressed to body; a crowd, too, whose psychical constitution is also dense, or compact, so that he no longer notices who it is that presses against him. I’ve done it from such a young age, and every year I seem to love it more. It’s such a creative atmosphere and the people you work with are a total blast. We never stop laughing.

My greatest fear is giving performances. I feel I am responsible for the audience BUT I am also scared of them.

With crowds I was cocky, too comfortable in the big picture. Wide-screen. I knew I could love at scale, but could I survive the intimacy of the close-up?

As a grown-up little child, I always had the flare for the arts. I just wanted to sing in front of people, dramatize and make people happy and laugh. For me, it was an escape as a little child because I was quite a very shy one

I just like observing people — it's something I've done ever since I was a kid, and I got really good at it. That's a big part of why I became a comedian. My audience is filled with every kind of person you can imagine, and I love that.

Meeting our audiences, or at least the members of the audience who would like to meet us, makes us different from other entertainers. We aren’t scared of our audiences. We’ve learned that the crowds that other entertainers might hate — the quiet crowds — include many people who are loving the show. I love quiet crowds now; I don’t see them as lacking enthusiasm, I see them as paying attention. We’ve learned that a joke that didn’t get a loud laugh might be someone’s favorite line.

I am not afraid... I was born to do this.
