Moral character is assessed not by what a man knows but by what he loves

"الإيمان بكل بساطة هو تكثيفٌ للحب. ينبغي أن تُحب أكثر، وسيتحول الحب إلى إيمان.
إن الرجل العاشق قد يحسب المرأة التي يحبها أروع امرأة على وجه الأرض، وهذا لون من الإيمان.
ومعدوم الإيمان لا يُمكنه أن يُحب؛ فهو "يُحب" هذه يومًا وتلك بعد عام؛ إن أرواح هؤلاء مُتسكعة شريدة عقيم!"

واعلم أن حقيقة الكفر والإيمان وحدًهما، والحق والضلال وسرًهما، لا ينجلي للقلوب المدنسة بطلب المال والجاه وحبهما، بل إنما ينكشف ذلك لقلوب طهرت عن وسخ أوضار الدنيا أولا، ثم صقلت بالرياضة الكاملة ثانيا، ثم نورت بالذكر الصافي ثالثا، ثم غذيت بالفكر الصائب رابعا، ثم زينت بملازمة حدود الشرع خامسا، حتى فاض عليها من النور من مشكاة النبوة، وصارت كأنها مرآة مجلوة، وصار مصباح الإيمان في زجاجة قلبه مشرق الأنوار، يكاد زيته يضيء ولو لم تمسسه نار.

Empecemos por distinguir en el sentimiento del amor lo moral y lo físico. Lo físico es ese deseo general que impulsa a un sexo a unirse con otro. Lo moral es lo que determina ese deseo y lo fija exclusivamente en un solo objeto, o que, por lo menos, le da haica ese objeto preferido un mayor grado de energía. Ahora bien; es fácil ver que lo moral del amor es un sentimiento facticio nacido del uso de la sociedad y elogiado por las mujeres con suma habilidad y cuidado para implantar su imperio y hacer dominante el sexo que debía obedecer.

…there are men whom a happy disposition, a strong desire of glory and esteem, inspire with the same love for justice and virtue, which men in general have for riches and honours.

Since holiness is the main thing that excites, draws, and governs all gracious affections, it is no wonder that all such affections tend to holiness. That which men love, they desire to have and to be united to, and possessed of. That beauty which men delight in, they desire to be adorned with. Those acts which men delight in, they necessarily incline to do.

The Christian is in a different position from other people who are trying to be good. They hope, by being good, to please God if there is one; or—if they think there is not—at least they hope to deserve approval from good men. But the Christian thinks any good he does comes from the Christ-life inside him. He does not think God will love us because we are good, but that God will make us good because He loves us; just as the roof of a greenhouse does not attract the sun because it is bright, but becomes bright because the sun shines on it.

They hope, by being good, to please God if there is one; or — if they think there is not — at least they hope to deserve approval from good men. But the Christian thinks any good he does comes from the Christ-life inside him. There's something about love that resembles faith. It's kind of a blind trust, isn't it? The sweetest euphoria. The magic of connecting with a being beyond our limited, familiar selves. But if we get carried away by love- or by faith- it turns into a dogma, a fixation. The sweetness becomes sour. We suffer in the hands of gods that we ourselves created.

The ideals which have always shone before me and filled me with joy are goodness, beauty, and truth.

I am convinced that God is love, this thought has for me a primitive lyrical validity. When it is present to me, I am unspeakably blissful, when it is absent, I long for it more vehemently than does the lover for his object; but I do not believe, this courage I lack. For me the love of God is, both in a direct and in an inverse sense, incommensurable with the whole of reality. I am not cowardly enough to whimper and complain, but neither am I deceitful enough to deny that faith is something much higher. I can well endure living in my way, I am joyful and content, but my joy is not that of faith, and in comparison with that it is unhappy.

A world contrary to God must be kept within bounds by the world’s sword. But true Christians love God and their neighbors as themselves; they commit no evil by the grace of God. It is not necessary to compel them to goodness since they know better what is good than the law-imposing authority. They have a knowledge of God within, which is a knowledge of His commandments and His love. Having His love within they do good to others and are just to all men in accordance with His law so that the authorities which rule the world have no occasion to find them guilty.

Some have made the love of God the foundation of morality. This, too, is but a branch of our moral duties, which are generally divided into duties to God and duties to man. If we did a good act merely from the love of God and a belief that it is pleasing to Him, whence arises the morality of the Atheist? It is idle to say, as some do, that no such being exists. We have the same evidence of the fact as of most of those we act on, to-wit: their own affirmations, and their reasonings in support of them. I have observed, indeed, generally, that while in protestant countries the defections from the Platonic Christianity of the priests is to Deism, in catholic countries they are to Atheism. Diderot, D'Alembert, D'Holbach, Condorcet, are known to have been among the most virtuous of men. Their virtue, then, must have had some other foundation than the love of God.

Love of God implies love of religion. And religion exemplifies that creative spirit of God which is at work in history as well as in the mind of man. Thus, one ought to love any religion, that is, religion as such, and in any form—as a manifestation of the moral spirit, the divine spirit of mankind.
