the wild wine
that sets the wisest man to sing
at the top of his lungs,
laugh like a fool – it drives the
man to dancing... it even
tempts him to blurt out stories
better never told.

With wine, poetry, or virtue
as you choose.
But get drunk.

Wine can of their wits the wise beguile, Make the sage frolic, and the serious smile

So I the pleasant grape have pulled from the vine,
And yet I languish in great thirst, while others drink the wine.

I am tipsy after my
own feelings themselves have become wine.
I forget myself, world and all.

If the wine drinker
has a deep gentleness in him,
he will show that when drunk.
But if he has hidden anger and arrogance,
those appear.

Drunk am I with very love and awe;
'Twas ever thus with veritable seers — Too drunk with joy to tell us what they saw.

Day and night my thoughts incline
To the blandishments of wine:
Jars were made to drain, I think,
Wine, I know, was made to drink!

I was not myself on that night. The wine was in and the wit was out.

I drink, I huff, I strut, look big and stare;
And all this I can do, because I dare.

Laughter for the soul, and wine for the body.

Why was I born, when will I die?
Who can change the day of his birth,
who has a say in the day of his death?
Come, my beloved, I want to ask the spirit
of the wine to make me forget that we
shall never understand.

Let us have wine and woman, mirth and laughter,
Sermons and soda water the day after.

Man, being reasonable, must get drunk;
The best of life is but intoxication:
Glory, the grape, love, gold, in these are sunk
The hopes of all men, and of every nation;
Without their sap, how branchless were the trunk
Of life's strange tree, so fruitful on occasion:
But to return — Get very drunk; and when
You wake with head-ache, you shall see what then.

I have drunken deep of joy,
And I will taste no other wine tonight.
