هل في وسعي أن اختار أحلامي , لئلا أحلم بما لا يتحقق

اننا نكون قد قاربنا ان نستفيق حين نحلم اننا نحلم

Let me have my dreams but not what I dream of.

عليك أن تؤول حلمك .. و إلا سيبقى الحلم بلا تأويل

Even the extent to which our desires and goals are fulfilled creates a misleadingly optimistic impression of how well our lives are going. This is because there is actually a form of self “censorship” in the formulation of our desires and goals. While many of them are never fulfilled, there are many more potential desires and goals that we do not even formulate because we know that they are unattainable. For example, we know that we cannot live for a few hundred years and that we cannot gain expertise in all the subjects in which we are interested. Thus, we set goals that are less unrealistic (even if many of them are nonetheless somewhat optimistic). Thus, one hopes to live a life that is, by human standards, a long life, and we hope to gain expertise in some, perhaps very focused, area. What this means is that, even if all our desires and goals were fulfilled, our lives are not going as well as they would be going if the formulation of our desires had not been artificially restricted.

My hopes are not always realized, but I always hope.

In my early 20s, I wrote a list of ambitious things I wanted to do in life. Go bungee jumping. Create a movie. Start a business. That sort of thing. I did a few of them, but not most.

Looking back, however, that list was incredibly valuable because it taught me the usefulness of chasing bold ideas—even if they never materialize. The dreams that didn't happen changed shape and led me down other interesting paths.

The important thing isn't to achieve all your dreams, but to keep dreaming. Your desires change as you learn and grow. Old dreams will spawn new dreams. And eventually, one of these newer, more refined visions will find their moment and become reality.

As a person, you must have dreams, and actualising these dreams means that you have to struggle.

No matter what your goal is, you will suffer to achieve it. So pick a goal big enough it’s worth suffering for.

In many cases, the outcome you want will continue to elude you—even if you try harder.

But it may be possible if you try differently.

Can your current choices carry you to your desired future? If not, something has to change. You can't get there from here. You have to get on a different trajectory.
