Sex in space is more than a Big Bang.

Science fiction is and has been ripe to discuss other possibilities for sex and relationships: multiple marriages, communal structures, different genders. Writers like Theodore Sturgeon, Samuel R. Delany, Octavia Butler, Elizabeth Lynn, Nicola Griffith, Elisabeth Vonarburg, Candas Jane Dorsey, Eleanor Arnason, Storm Constantine have been my touchstones.

I suspect that one of the reasons we create fiction is to make sex exciting.

I think what I love the most about sci-fi (fandom) or people that are fans of sci-fi is that they are really hooked on the details and the storytelling aspect of everything. I’ve really enjoyed, I love jamming about scenes and the content of what we’re talking about and the themes in the show. And people are genuinely interested in the world that we’ve created and it’s really fun to talk to them about it. It almost feels like we’re talking at work, like I’m talking to another co-worker because they are just as invested and interested in the details and the nuances as we are. And I don’t think that any other kind of genre has that kind of attention to detail. So I think that’s kind of my favorite part of sci-fi fans.

I love sci-fi, especially when it comes to dialogue with fans; they're so involved with the series. It's a great experience to be able to talk with the fans of the show. As an actor, you know much more about your character, even more so sometimes than gets shown on the show. Sci-fi fans really have a commitment to the characters even as much as the actors do. There's a synergy between making television and who gets to watch it.

I like sex because it's one of the ways that people leave off operating so much with forebrain. If I like poetry because it ties all the different ways of knowing and being together, sex does the same thing.

The reason I’m interested in science fiction is that when I was little and we had firesides, sweats, and other ceremonies, we were telling stories about star peoples that came to earth in, basically, space canoes. For me, the concept of a spaceship was not unusual. And, of course, we are all star people. We are made of stardust, which is scientifically accurate. Everything is made of stardust.

Science fiction and fantasy are about looking at the world through a different lens. So whatever I write, including sex scenes, I may first think, how can I cause myself, and the reader, to see this differently? What can I do to challenge, delight, surprise, unsettle?
