Education is the key to empowerment and development. As educators, our role is not just to transmit knowledge, but to build confidence, critical thinking skills, and a sense of responsibility in our students.

As an empowerment right, education is the primary vehicle by which economically and socially marginalised adults and children can lift themselves out of poverty, and obtain the means to participate fully in their communities.

Ms. Bouayach quoted Nelson Mandela’s belief that "education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world. She underlined that this idea extends beyond achieving sustainable development, fighting climate change, promoting equality and human rights or building a better future. It plays a crucial role in maintaining peace and preventing atrocities and violations.

As I have not ceased to say since 29 February 2004, from exile in Central Africa, Jamaica and now South Africa, I will return to Haiti to the field I know best and love: education. We can only agree with the words of the great Nelson Mandela, that indeed education is a powerful weapon for changing the world.

The longer I stay in education, the more I realize that it is an effective instrument for development and empowerment. I see fewer distinctions than I used to between various kinds of involvement such as social action, pastoral work or education or even work in an administrative set up, as I am now in. I find my work very priestly. I don't have to jump from one sector (religious) to the other (secular) as the distinction between the two gets thinner. Education for me is spiritual involvement.

Education is the principal tool of socio-economic development and unless all societies are provided with right type of education, adequate in quality and quantity, it will not be possible to tackle satisfactorily the problem of ignorance of health and poverty which afflicts the majority of human beings in the world.

Education is the great engine of personal development. It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that the son of a mineworker can become the head of the mine, that a child of farmworkers can become the president of a great nation. It is what we make out of what we have, not what we are given, that separates one person from another.

As study after study has taught us, there is no tool for development more effective than the empowerment of women.

Education...beyond all other devices of human origin, is a great equalizer of conditions of men — the balance wheel of the social machinery...It does better than to disarm the poor of their hostility toward the rich; it prevents being poor.
