We trained hard, but it seemed that every time we were beginning to form up into teams we would be reorganized. Presumably the plans for our employment were being changed. I was to learn later in life that, perhaps because we are so good at organizing, we tend as a nation to meet any new situation by reorganizing; and a wonderful method it can be for creating the illusion of progress while producing confusion, inefficiency and demoralization.

By worrying a lot, we become a nation of worries.

We are over-governed, over-spent, over-taxed, over-borrowed and over-manned.

We're a nation of exhausted and over-stressed adults raising over-scheduled children.

It is necessary for us as a nation not merely to be organized for war but to be organized for peace, not only to be an armed nation while other nations are armed but to have our industry, our productive capacity organized while other nations are organizing their industry and their productive capacity. I am worried about our tendency to over invest in things and under invest in people.

I believe that it is possible to overlegislate ourselves into a highly restrictive form of government.

I think myself that we have more machinery of government than is necessary, too many parasites living on the labor of the industrious.

What we must be careful of is not to be afraid of our borrowings. I think myself that there is a sort of over-anxious desire for national art in this country.

We have entered upon a period of struggle. Our national fault is that too much softness has crept into our councils, and we imagine that great national dangers can be conjured by a plentiful administration of platitudes and rose-water.

We have a propensity for starting and joining all kinds of organisations, the result was that we were spending more time in conferences than implementing the decisions.
