Confidence is a feeling, which reflects the coherence of the information and the cognitive ease of processing it. It is wise to take admissions of uncertainty seriously, but declarations of high confidence mainly tell you that an individual has constructed a coherent story in his mind, not necessarily that the story is true.

One version of confidence is: I've got this figured out.

Another version is: I can figure this out.

The first is arrogant and close-minded. The second is humble and open-minded.

Be humble about what you know, but confident about what you can learn.

This is particularly true in childhood, when we are both most dependent on others and most affected by our negative experiences.

Confidence isn’t about removing all doubt. Confidence is knowing you’ll be all right if things go wrong.

Confidence is really just the ability to unapologetically like yourself.

Confidence in your own abilities is the key ingredient to success.

The confidence we experience as we make a judgment is not a reasoned evaluation of the probability that it is right. Confidence is a feeling, one determined mostly by the coherence of the story and by the ease with which it comes to mind, even when the evidence for the story is sparse and unreliable. The bias toward coherence favors overconfidence. An individual who expresses high confidence probably has a good story, which may or may not be true.

True self-confidence is “the courage to be open — to welcome change and new ideas regardless of their source.” Real self-confidence is not reflected in a title, an expensive suit, a fancy car, or a series of acquisitions. It is reflected in your mindset: your readiness to grow.
