For many, maths is fundamentally beautiful; indeed many mathematicians won’t be entirely satisfied with their work until it has an elegance, simplicity and grace. Others are drawn by its ‘unreasonable effectiveness’ - its power to explain the world we live in.

The mathematician’s patterns, like the painter’s or the poet’s must be beautiful; the ideas like the colours or the words, must fit together in a harmonious way. Beauty is the first test: there is no permanent place in the world for ugly mathematics.

Those who assert that the mathematical sciences say nothing of the beautiful or the good are in error. For these sciences say and prove a great deal about them; if they do not expressly mention them, but prove attributes which are their results or definitions, it is not true that they tell us nothing about them. The chief forms of beauty are order and symmetry and definiteness, which the mathematical sciences demonstrate in a special degree.

Beauty in mathematics is seeing the truth without effort.

Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty — a beauty cold and austere, like that of sculpture, without appeal to any part of our weaker nature, without the gorgeous trappings of painting or music, yet sublimely pure, and capable of a stern perfection such as only the greatest art can show.

It's very hard for me. I don't see the meaning in numbers. I don't have the possibility to understand what they mean in terms of success. I don't get a rush out of them – I wish I did. It's a very hard question for me to answer without seeming ungrateful because I am very honoured that people have let 'Runaway' into their hearts.

It is a commonplace that the great values of life cannot be expressed in numbers and statistics, and this is partly the reason why the ideas of quality and permanence have been so neglected in the period of the Great American Impasse. Neither the holiness of a Santa Teresa, nor the heroism of Tone, nor yet the profundity of theological truth can be expressed in numbers. But in the technicized world numbers become involved with human or inhuman activities of every kind, which find their expression in statistical recording. The various denominations vie in their yearly revenues from whist drives and bingo parties; games are expressed in numbers which are broadcasted all over the country; human beings are said to be "worth" so and so many thousand dollars a year; Bridge has been evolved into a system of mathematical probabilities (Culbertson); houses are evaluated by their rooms and floors, and public squares by their equivalent in money.

To emphasize only the beautiful seems to me to be like a mathematical system that only concerns itself with positive numbers.

Si decís a las personas grandes: 'He visto una hermosa casa de ladrillos rojos con geranios en las ventanas y palomas en el techo...', no acertarán a imaginarse la casa. Es necesario decirles: 'He visto una casa de cien mil fracos'. Entonces exclaman: '¡Qué hermosa es!'
Si les decís: 'La prueba de que el principito existió es que era encantador, que reía, y que quería un cordero. Querer un cordero es prueba de que se existe', se encogerán de hombros y os tratarán como se trata a un niño. Pero si les decís: 'El planeta de donde venía es el asteroide B 612', entonces quedarán convencidos y os dejarán tranquilo sin preguntaros más. Son así. Y no hay que reprocharles. Los niños deben ser muy indulgentes con las personas grandes.
Pero, claro está, nosotros que comprendemos la vida, nos burlamos de los números.

Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty—a beauty cold and austere, like that of sculpture, without appeal to any part of our weaker nature, without the gorgeous trappings of painting or music, yet sublimely pure, and capable of a stern perfection such as only the greatest art can show. The true spirit of delight, the exaltation, the sense of being more than Man, which is the touchstone of the highest excellence, is to be found in mathematics as surely as poetry.

when I have finished, if the solution is not beautiful, I know it is
wrong.
