Meditation isn’t hard.

All you have to do is sit there and do nothing. Just sit down. Close your eyes and say, 'I’m just going to give myself a break for an hour. This is my hour off from life. This is the hour I’m not going to do anything.'

My meditation is simple. It does not require any complex practices. It is simple. It is singing. It is dancing. It is sitting silently

Put simply, it states that: meditation is the fixing of the mind on an object and holding it there. What then results after prolonged practice is the merging of the mind with this object, whatever it may be... The beauty of this is that it can be practiced all day every day, in whatever one may be doing. When washing the dishes, think only of washing the dishes; when working at your job, think only of your job, and so on.

Meditation is turning off society and listening to yourself. It only “works” when done for its own sake. Hiking is walking meditation. Journaling is writing meditation. Praying is gratitude meditation. Showering is accidental meditation. Sitting quietly is direct meditation.

I can attest that when one goes into silence and meditates for weeks or months at a time, doing nothing else — not speaking, reading, or writing, just making a moment-to-moment effort to observe the contents of consciousness — one has experiences that are generally unavailable to people who have not undertaken a similar practice.

Meditation can be as simple as sitting quietly and just mentally noting whenever a thought pops into your head. As each thought emerges, notice it, note thought in your head, let it go, and reset. In doing that, you flex the muscle of returning to the “present moment.” In a ten-minute session, you might have one hundred thoughts pop into your head. Having so many thoughts pop up might seem like a failure, but noticing them is actually the work. The alternative is that you don’t notice

Meditation is the emptying of the mind of all thought, for thought and feeling dissipate energy. They are repetitive, producing mechanical activities which are a necessary part of existence. But they are only part, and thought and feeling cannot possibly enter into the immensity of life. Quite a different approach is necessary, not the path of habit, association and the known; there must be freedom from these. Meditation is the emptying of the mind of the known. It cannot be done by thought or by the hidden prompting of thought, nor by desire in the form of prayer, nor through the self-effacing hypnotism of words, images, hopes, and vanities. All these have to come to an end, easily, without effort and choice, in the flame of awareness.

Each moment, whatsoever you are doing, do it totally. Simple things — taking a bath; take it totally, forget the whole world; sitting, sit; walking, walk, above all don’t wobble; sit under the shower and let the whole existence fall on you. Be merged with those beautiful drops of water falling on you. Small things: cleaning the house, preparing food, washing clothes, going for a morning walk — do them totally, then there is no need for any meditation.
