But can we, should we, let apprehensions about the future immobilize us in the present?

We never keep to the present. We recall the past; we anticipate the future as if were found it too slow in coming and were trying to hurry it up, or we recall the past as if to stay it's too rapid flight. We are so unwise that we wander about in times that do not belong to us, and do not think of the only one that does; so vain that we dream of times that are not and blindly flee the only one that is. The fact is the present usually hurts. We thrust it out of sight because it distresses us, and if we find it enjoyable, we are sorry to see it slip away. We try to give it the support of the future, and think how we are going to arrange things over which we have no control for a time we can never be sure of reaching. (Page 9)

[A]wareness of time ceases to be an asset when concern for the future makes it almost impossible to live in the present[.]

Awareness of the present Every second you spend thinking about the next moment, you avoid embracing the present.
Ensure your life isn’t lived entirely in your head.

Relax. Your rumination, analysis, worry, and need to control the future are robbing you of the current moment. Yes, there is a time for preparation, but continually thinking of the future guarantees you'll never enjoy the present.

the growth of an acute sense of the past and the future gives us a correspondingly dim sense of the present. In other words, we seem to reach a point where the advantages of being conscious are outweighed by its disadvantages, where extreme sensitivity makes us unadaptable.

The price we pay for the anticipation of our future is anxiety about it.

There is a danger of expecting the results of the future to be predicted from the past.

The problem about the future is that it keeps turning into the present.

Let each of us examine his thoughts; he will find them wholly concerned with the past or the future. We almost never think of the present, and if we do think of it, it is only to see what light it throws on our plans for the future. The present is never our end. The past and the present are our means, the future alone our end. Thus we never actually live, but hope to live, and since we are always planning how to be happy, it is inevitable that we should never be so.

But a lot of our thinking is caught up in dwelling on the past, trying to control the future, generating misperceptions, and worrying about what others are thinking.

If we continue to hold on to a dream for something in the future, we lose the present moment. And if we lose the present, we lose everything.

If the present tries to sit in judgment on the past, it will lose the future.
