He smiles at me, and it is a knock on my chest, as if he had reached out and rapped it. My chest opens, my heart admits him.

I had not intended to love him; the reader knows I had wrought hard to extirpate from my soul the germs of love there detected; and now, at the first renewed view of him, they spontaneously revived, great and strong! He made me love him without looking at me.

And I remember when I met him.

And only now, when he was gray-haired, had he fallen in love properly, thoroughly, for the first time in his life.

"Viola?" he says.
And I turn to look at him -
And when I do, I can hear everything he's thinking.

Clearer than before, clearer than seems possible -
And I'm not even sure I'm supposed to, but I look him in the eyes and I see it -
In the middle of everything he's feeling -
Even after we fought -
Even after I doubted him -

I see how much he loves me.

Love, which is quickly kindled in the gentle heart, seized this man for the fair form that was taken from me, the manner still hurts me. Love which absolves no beloved one from loving, seized me so strongly with his charm that, as thou seest, it does not leave me yet

For in this love he now felt there was compassion: without which love is untempered, and is not whole, and does not last.
