When I see myself, I wonder: what do others try to see in themselves?

The things you hate about others are the things you cannot see in yourself.

She said my problem was that I saw things in people that they didn’t see in themselves.

When I speak of good hearing, I do not mean listening to others; I mean simply listening to yourself. When I speak of good eyesight, I do not mean looking at others; I mean simply looking at yourself. He who does not look at himself but looks at others, who does not get hold of himself but gets hold of others, is getting what other men have got and failing to get what he himself has got. He finds joy in what brings joy to other men, but finds no joy in what would bring joy to himself.

Anyone who doesn't know others doesn't know himself.

Unless you really understand others, you can hardly attain your own self-understanding.

Many fail to grasp what they have seen,

although they tell themselves they know.

The hardest thing for people to see is themselves (p. 34)

Do you not think that there are things which you cannot understand, and yet which are; that some people see things that others cannot?

You cannot enjoy others until you
enjoy yourself because you cannot give to others what you do not have.

For Persons are selves and, in one respect at least, I was now a Not-
self, simultaneously perceiving and being the Not-self of the things around me. To this new-born Not-
self, the behavior, the appearance, the very thought of the self it had momentarily ceased to be, and of
other selves, its one-time fellows, seemed not indeed distasteful (for distastefulness was not one of the
categories in terms of which I was thinking), but enormously irrelevant.

What are we, if not what we see in another.

Have you ever considered, beloved other, how invisible we are to each other? We look at each other without seeing. We listen to each other and hear only a voice inside out self.

The words of others are mistakes of our hearing, shipwrecks of our understanding. How confidently we believe OUR meanings of other people's words.

Am I mad, to see what others do not see, or are they mad who are responsible for all that I am seeing?
