I was (...) determined to look the way I wanted to look, and I wanted to cut my hair. I wanted to look different because I was used to looking different. Because of my religious background I'd always been encouraged to look different.

I had to cut my hair to play, so for me it's so important that little girls can play football if they want to. That's what I really want to fight for.

I suppose at heart it was the haircut that did it; that exploded the ordinary order of things and showed me the possibilities that had been there all along, hidden among the patterns in the wallpaper. In a different age, we used to take acid for more or less the same reason.

“You need a haircut, boy!” My father had only glanced at me across the kitchen table as he spoke but I had already seen in his eyes the coming storm. For forty years I combed my hair that way, and every time I did, I pushed my mother away from me. There was much she didn’t like about my life — and the parting of my hair became a ritual parting of the ways with her.
