In ancient Athens, when a politician was trying to get the votes of the working class by appearing very humble in a tattered coat with big holes in it, Socrates unmasked his hypocrisy by exclaiming, 'Your vanity shows forth from every whole in your coat'.

He is a fool who tries to withstand the stronger, for he does not get the mastery and suffers pain besides his shame.

glory follows virtue as its shadow; and deserting those who seek it, it seeks those who despise it.

All too often cowardice wears the habit of wounded pride.

your soul has been assailed by cowardice,
which often weighs so heavily on a man — distracting him from honorable trials — as phantoms frighten beasts when shadows fall.

That man is not truly brave who is afraid either to seem or to be, when it suits him, a coward.

Shame on me for making such a mockery of myself. Blame it on my wounded pride. The fact is that my fear of being ridiculed is so intense I'd rather beat my critics to the punch. That's the epitome of cowardice.
