Prevailing customs and existing institutions are threatened by pioneers and prophets as well as by robbers and murderers, with the result that saints and sinners have often been thrust into adjoining cells. The crucifixion of Jesus between two thieves is the supreme illustration of a historic truth that nobility and depravity have often received the same punishment.
The transfixing of men hung in mid-air was one of the admiral’s favourite forms of execution, since it gave his soldiers good practice. However, there was a strange incident when three among a group of captured sailors from the Coromandel coast threw their hands up to heaven and told him that they wanted to become Christians. Da Gama, unmoved, ordered the interpreter to tell them ‘that even though they became Christians, yet still he would kill them’. The ship’s priest was allowed to baptize them none the less, and as he declaimed the Pater Noster and the Ave Maria they recited his words. ‘When this was done, then they hanged them up strangled, that they might not feel the arrows.’ The crossbowmen transfixed the rest of da Gama’s victims strung from the yardarm; but the arrows which struck the newly-baptized trio ‘did not go in, nor make any mark’. At this, the admiral seemed troubled. The three bodies were shrouded and thrown into the sea, which the chronicler of this event called the Lord’s ‘great mercy’ to gentiles. The priest said prayers and read psalms. However, da Gama was troubled only briefly. When yet another Brahmin was sent from Calicut to plead for peace, he had his lips cut off, and his ears cut off; the ears of a dog were sewn on instead, and the Brahmin was sent back to the Zamorin in that state. He had brought with him three young boys, two of them his sons and a nephew. They were hanged from the yardarm and their bodies sent ashore.

Catholic priests know where the shoe pinches. But their day is done, and they know it. They are far too intelligent not to see that, and to enter upon a hopeless battle. But if they do, I shall certainly not make martyrs of them. We shall brand them as ordinary criminals. I shall tear the mask of honesty from their faces. And if that is not enough, I shall make them appear ridiculous and contemptible. I shall order films to be made about them. We shall show the history of the monks on the cinema. Let the whole mass of nonsense, selfishness, repression and deceit be revealed: how they drained the money out of the country, how they haggled with the Jews for the world, how they committed incest.
So it was that the Catherines poured water and spooned gruel, while the Clares prayed for the intercession of the saints. The Catherines changed sheets. The Clares practiced mortification of the flesh. The Catherines employed antibiotics. The Clares made a public display of a kneecap of their patron saint.
It was soon widely know to which hospital one went to get well, and to which one went to die.
The limit that was thought to be unbreakable was exceeded yesterday in a small village in northern France, where two Muslims entered a church during Mass and, praising Allah, slit the throats of the priest and a female worshipper after forcing them to kneel and reciting passages from the Koran. [...] Not even the Nazi SS, in their ferocious roundups of Jews and partisans, ever dared to cross the threshold of churches, which were among the safest refuges for their prey. Violating the house of God, cutting the throat of his minister on the altar is the fulfilment, for the first time in modern Europe, of a mad invitation by Muhammad, the bloodthirsty prophet, to all Muslims. [...] What we do not grant them, they take with bombs, machine guns, trucks and knives. They know that we are weak, that democracy prevents us from responding blow for blow with the same effectiveness. We are prisoners of our freedoms, which we have kindly granted them for free.
Judas gave greater scandal than even the High Priests: his conduct was more painful to Christ and to his Apostles, and to the whole Church, than was that of Pilate, or of those who nailed the Savior to the cross. Wherefore, warn all, not only against secret societies, but also against all societies of Catholics whose rules or practices are not in harmony with the spirit of the Church.
