It is my intention, never to start with modeling directly [in the painting]. In my view this is the task of the sculptor. I am modeling 'the surfaces'. Wij zijn vertrokken toen het nog geen lente was juist om hier alles te zien uitkomen tegen die schone heuvellanden.. .Dat land van Bemelen is toch zo mooi, ik heb er notities opgenomen [schetsen]. Daarvoor heb ik nog een heele belangrijke teekening gemaakt. Een jonge Limburger.. ..vooral ook daarvan dacht ik nu eens een dieper psychologische studie te maken. Ik ben daar nog niet geheel klaar voor, doch daar is mijn tocht nu goed voor om die nog eens fijn te doorgronden.
