I do not believe that sheer suffering teaches. If suffering alone taught, all the world would be wise, since everyone suffers. To suffering must be added mourning, understanding, patience, love, openness and the willingness to remain vulnerable. All these and other factors combined, if the circumstances are right, can teach and can lead to rebirth.

Only through suffering do we learn

Suffering is an excellent teacher, and Aeschylus says, "We learn by sufferings. "We are easily] up; sufferings keep us humble. We easily turn to worldly things. Sufferings make us turn to ( love ourselves; sufferings teach us to love God."

Suffering has its beneficial aspects. It can be an excellent teacher.

True knowledge comes only through suffering

Suffering by itself has no meaning...But suffering shared with the suffering of Christ has a tremendous meaning...Suffering is really the most beautiful way of growing in holiness to be like Jesus.

To suffer is to produce knowledge.

Suffering brings experience.

To suffer without complaint is the only lesson we have to learn in this life

Without suffering, there's no happiness. So we shouldn't discriminate against the mud. We have to learn how to embrace and cradle our own suffering and the suffering of the world, with a lot of tenderness.

Suffering is nothing by itself. But suffering shared with the passion of Christ is a wonderful gift, the most beautiful gift, a token of love.

Suffering is a spiritual thing. It is the most immediate revelation of consciousness, and it may be that our body was given us simply in order that suffering might be enabled to manifest itself. A man who had never known suffering, either in greater or less degree, would scarcely possess consciousness of himself. The child first cries at birth when the air, entering into his lungs and limiting him, seems to say to him: You have to breathe me in order to live!

He who learns must suffer' and that 'against our will comes wisdom through the awful grace' of enduring pain...

Wisdom comes alone through suffering.
