Acknowledging that we are all churned up is the first and most difficult step in any practice. Without compassionate recognition that we are stuck, it’s impossible to liberate ourselves from confusion. ‘Doing something different’ is anything that interrupts our ancient habit of indulging in our emotions. We do anything to cut the strong tendency to spin out… Anything that’s non-habitual will do — even sing and dance or run around the block. We do anything that doesn’t reinforce our crippling habits. The third most difficult practice is to then remember that this is not something we do just once or twice. Interrupting our destructive habits and awakening our heart is the work of a lifetime.

Ugly problems often require ugly solutions. Solving an ugly problem in a pure manner is bloody hard.

Change is hard; being miserable is harder.

We acknowledged that healing is messy, that sometimes it feels like two steps forward and five steps back. But in those moments when we’re kind to ourselves, when we accept that progress isn’t linear, we grow.

It's sometimes a painful process. It's a change that has to be motivated by a higher purpose, by the willingness to subordinate what you think you want now for what you want later.

It's not as easy as it is with chewing shame and foolishness to chew the wreckage of broken time.

Doing it right is hard. Doing it over is harder.

Survival is ugly. Healing is messy. Self-love is complicated.

It takes an intellectual and physical effort to shove aside the comfortably worn neural pathways and go in a different direction.
