All things are at odds when God lets a thinker loose on this planet.

Beware when the great God lets loose a thinker on this planet. Then all things are at risk. It is as when a conflagration has broken out in a great city, and no man knows what is safe, or where it will end. There is not a piece of science, but its flank may be turned to-morrow; there is not any literary reputation, not the so-called eternal names of fame, that may not be revised and condemned. The very hopes of man, the thoughts of his heart, the religion of nations, the manner and morals of mankind, are all at the mercy of a new generalization. Generalization is always a new influx of the divinity into the mind. Hence the thrill that attends it.

Beware of the man whose god is in the skies.

Beware of thinkers whose minds function only when they are fueled by a quotation.

The moral of the story? Beware of intellectuals who make a monotheism out of their theories of motivation.

Beware of the person of one book.

A great philosopher in the wrong is like a beacon on the reefs which says to seamen: steer clear of me.

A person should never be satisfied with a thought God, for when the thought perishes, the God also perishes.

Beware of zealots of any flavor. Beware of proselytizers of religious utopias. And beware of professors who confuse teaching students how to think with teaching them what to think.

Woe to the thinker who is not the gardener but only the soil of the plants that grow in him!

No one can be a great thinker who does not recognize that as a thinker it is his first duty to follow his intellect to whatever conclusions it may lead.
